The week leading up to Easter has had a fair bit of news about the resource industry. Xtrata announced a deal to supply coal to Japan, Australian miners perform well at international mining games and UWA and Rio Tinto are embarking on a research project on Aboriginal rock art. Australia and the USA announced a deal to bring American workers in to help close the skills gap. The wage rise for apprentices is causing some real concern within the industry.

How come if Australia is experiencing a skills crisis, the only jobs being advertised are for engineers? If you're working in the trades or working as a labourer, it would be easy to think it's all a hoax. While the media has made much of the skills shortage, a lot of people just aren't seeing evidence to support the claims. All that is about to change.
