This week reported another round of ‘they said, we said’ as the unions and industry discussed training initiatives. Migration is set to rise to assist in the skills shortage while WA tradies are reported to lead the world on pay scales. Olympic Dam is expanding and Rio Tinto is launching a massive recruitment campaign using Olympic athletes as spokespeople. In other, somewhat bizarre news, space mining is being discussed as a viable industry.

The big story this week, hands down, was the announcement of the closure of the coal mine at Norwich Park. Qantas has opened a FIFO route between Sydney and Newman Mining in WA and Tasmania workers are being lured to work in WA. We were super encouraged to hear the FMG Indigenous programs are paying off for everyone involved. One story that got everyone talking on our Facebook page this week was the feature about FIFO families in The Australian. The I Think Mining blog has a great story on geologist and why they deserve a high wage.
