New Mentoring Program for Women in Australian Resources Industry

Posted: 10/10/2012 5:00:00 AM by Gina Meibusch, AWRA Program Manager, AMMA

An exciting new chapter in the Australian resources industry is starting which we expect will create positive ripples throughout the mining, energy, oil and gas, construction and allied services sectors. Gina Meibusch, AWRA Program Manager at AMMA, is our guest blogger today and introduces the AWRA e-Mentoring program kicking off this year.  –Ed.

AWRA e-Mentoring Program

AMMA is pleased to announce that it is currently developing a national program - the Australian Women in Resources Alliance (AWRA) e-Mentoring Program - that will be offered free-of-charge to women in these industries with the support of the Australian Government through the National Resources Sector Workforce Strategy.

Technology key to mentoring program

The same factors that make mentoring so important for women in these workplaces often make it difficult for them to access mentoring programs: remote locations, complex rosters, and the shortage of other women.

The AWRA e-Mentoring Program overcomes these problems, however, by using technology to allow participants to be involved regardless of their location – the e-Mentoring software platform includes integrated chat, email, internet telephony and video conferencing, as well as providing tools, tips and guidance for making the most out of a mentor-mentee relationship.

The program will provide participants with the ability to develop their knowledge, and skills, and to access professional development opportunities and to work through personal and employment challenges with the support and guidance of a mentor specifically matched to their needs.

Expressions of Interest now being taken

Expressions of interest are currently being taken from women who are interested in being involved in the program as a mentee. Men and women are also being sought to share their experience and wisdom and act as a mentor.

While we cannot promise that everyone will be able to be partnered with a mentor or mentee, we at AWRA will do our best to provide this opportunity for every applicant. It is anticipated that the first intake of mentors and mentees will commence at the end of 2012, with further intakes throughout 2013.

Becoming a mentor or mentee

If you would like to express your interest in this program, send an email to awra@amma.org.au and provide your name, organisation, contact details, whether you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, and your reasons why.
