29/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
A recent article in Mining Australia caught our eye. Mental Health: The Forgotten Side of Mine Safety broached the subject of depression. While women are quite good at identifying when they are feeling depressed, it’s often a different story for men.

28/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
Your job search has been successful and you’ve been offered a job. All the effort you put into getting a new job – training, writing your resume, and interviewing – has paid off. The hard work is over, right? Think again, maybe the hardest part is just beginning.

It's Not Personal!

27/09/2011 05:00 AM / Jacqui Cocliff - AMMA
Mining Oil and Gas Jobs welcomes back guest blogger, Jacqui Cocliff, a Training & Development Consultant at AMMA. Jacqui has extensive experience in recruiting. She offers advice on what to do if you've been fired from your job.

So you've just been fired and you're taking it hard. It seems unfair. You worked hard, kicked some goals, and got on with your colleagues but it wasn't enough. Of course, everyone in the office is very sympathetic but they will still get up and go to work in the morning.

Queensland Wants More Women to Work in the Mines

26/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
The Queensland Government has called for more women to consider a career in the mining and resources sector. Queensland is a major mining state and the industry is both a major employer and contributor to the economy. In fact, a report published in November 2010 claimed the industry had generated almost 300,000 jobs and pumped $50 billion into the state's economy.

25/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
It's no secret the Australian resource industry is suffering a skills shortage. What we don't hear discussed often is how many Australians would like to work in mining or oil and gas but can't get the jobs they want due to lack of experience. Has that happened to you? If so, it might make sense to look at our updated section on Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

We were really glad to hear that.

21/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
The impending mining boom in Australia is making some “strange bedfellows”, as the saying goes, with the industry, unions and Government forming a new alliance to ensure the resources sector can find the skilled workers it so desperately needs.

What Makes You So Special?

21/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
How often have you heard that? In one form or another, it’s the question every jobseeker must anticipate and have a ready answer. Often, an employer won’t ask the question directly and tries to pry it out in the course of an interview. Have you thought about what makes you stand out in a field of qualified candidates? We have.

Is There an Upside to Redundancy?

19/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
If you were hanging out on Twitter last Thursday afternoon, you couldn’t avoid the eruption of tweets concerning the dismissal of Fremantle Docker’s head coach Mark Harvey. People are upset over the sacking of the popular coach and especially incensed a replacement was ushered in so quickly. Harvey exited Perth for a fishing holiday leaving the punters to wonder what happened.

Alternative Energy Creates Financial Independence for Small Town

18/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
Small towns regularly struggle to fund infrastructure upgrades and civil projects. Often funded by loans, the resulting debt is a burden for small communities. The southern German village of Wildpoldsried has developed an exciting new model by exploiting the growing renewable energy market to break free of this trend.

Have We Lost the 'Human' in Human Resources?

16/09/2011 05:00 AM / Jacqui Cocliff - AMMA
Mining Oil and Gas Jobs is thrilled to welcome our first guest blogger, Jacqui Cocliff, a Training & Development Consultant at AMMA. Jacqui has extensive experience in recruiting. She offers advice on how employers and recruiters can enhance their hiring success rates.

As companies fight for skilled workers in a diminishing talent pool, they may be losing the very thing that guarantees success – the human factor. By creating sophisticated websites, and replacing face-to-face contact, they’re removing the most effective method of communication in the process.

The largest gas project in Australia needs 10,000 workers WA needs 150,000

15/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs

Two years ago, on September 14, 2009, the West Australian Government signed-off on the single biggest resource project in Australian history. The Gorgon Gas Project is bigger than WA’s $27 billion North West Shelf Project and bigger than any of the State’s multi-billion dollar iron ore operations.

Is Australia the World's Most Liveable Country?

14/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
Australia is called “the lucky country”, but is it also the world’s most “liveable” country? The latest survey by the Economist magazine certainly seems to suggest that’s the case.

The FIFO Life

13/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs

On September 11th, 2001, I was at home alone in Kuala Lumpur. My husband was at a work site in a remote part of Malaysia. We were living a Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) lifestyle and I was accustomed to him being out of contact for most of every day.  It was tough knowing I wouldn’t be able to speak to him that horrid night when I most wanted support. It was much worse the next morning when he uncharacteristically missed our scheduled call.

What is the SOL and Why is it Important?

12/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
Do you know what SOL stands for? Do you know why it’s important? If you’re considering work in Australia, the Skilled Occupation List – or SOL - could make your life very easy.  For most skilled migration visas, you will satisfy the 'skilled occupation' requirement if you have the skills and/or qualifications of an occupation on the SOL.

An ongoing issue for people wanting work in the mining industry has been how to get the initial experience, providing a 'foot in the door', so to speak. Jobseekers have long been frustrated with how to obtain mining experience when nearly ever job requires previous experience as a condition of employment. A new program announced in Queensland indicates things are about to change in favour of the jobseeker.

07/09/2011 05:00 AM / Mining Oil and Gas Jobs
It’s no secret Australia is becoming an increasingly diverse society. The resource industry is no longer a place consisting of groups of similar people with similar backgrounds. The make-up of our teams is becoming more and more diverse in terms of race, culture, age, gender, beliefs and personalities. Culturally our country and industry embrace this change but leading a diverse team can present new challenges.
